Training and qualifications

Op. Dr. Reşit Burak Kayan graduated from Istanbul University, Istanbul Faculty of Medicine, the oldest medical school in Türkiye. He then completed his residency in plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery at Vakıf Gureba Training and Research Hospital, which was incorporated into Bezmiâlem Vakıf University Faculty of Medicine during the course of his training.

Reconstructive microsurgery training

Dr. Kayan spent six months at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taiwan, one of the highest-volume reconstructive microsurgery centres in the world, training in microsurgical technique including vascularised lymph node transfer for the treatment of lymphoedema. He subsequently began performing lymph node transfer surgery in Türkiye.

Microsurgery is reconstructive rather than cosmetic work, but the training matters in aesthetic surgery too. Operating at the scale of individual blood vessels builds a detailed working knowledge of how tissue receives its blood supply — which is the factor that governs how a breast reduction heals, where a scar can safely be placed, and how much tissue can be moved without compromising it.

Research and patents

During his residency Dr. Kayan developed the Smart Footprint and Smart Bed Sheet, a pressure-mapping system that formed the basis of his specialist thesis. He completed both the software and the manufacturing stages of the device, and holds international patents on the invention. The work received an award in the resident research competition of the Turkish Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons.

Practice

Dr. Kayan founded Eticlinic in Istanbul, where consultations and pre- and post-operative reviews take place.

Working with international patients

Most of the patients Dr. Kayan sees from abroad travel from the United Kingdom, Ireland and continental Europe. The practice is set up around that: an initial online consultation before you commit to travelling, an in-person examination once you arrive, and structured follow-up after you return home.

Approach

Not everyone who enquires is a suitable candidate for the operation they have in mind, and being told so is a normal outcome of a consultation rather than a failed one. Where surgery is appropriate, the aim of the first conversation is to make sure you understand what the procedure does, what it does not do, what recovery genuinely involves and what the risks are — before any decision is made.
